I want to see dolphins which trip should I take?
Dolphins are found in Kauai waters all year long. The best time to see them is in the morning. This is when they are usually in close to shore resting and playing. Latter in the day they usually move further offshore and start looking for food. On the morning snorkel trip we see dolphins about every trip. On the afternoon trips we see dolphins about half of the time.

When can I see whales?
The Humpback whales start arriving in Hawaii in November and the last ones are gone by June. The best time to see them is from January to March. At that time there will be lots of whales and multiple sightings on just about every trip.

There are also smaller whales that are sometimes seen in Hawaii. They are Pilot whales, False Killer whales, Mellon head whales etc. they look much like large dolphins. They are seen only rarely. For them you just have to be lucky.

Captain Splash's Tour?
Captain Splash usually works from Sat. to Mon. Blue Dolphin has two boats and Captain Splash doesn't make the work schedule. If you would like to go on one of Captain Splash's trips go on one of his work days and let us know. We can try to put you on Splash's boat.

I am leaving soon can I still make a reservation?
You can try? Some of the trips fill up. During the peak seasons most of the trips fill up.

Make sure that you leave some contact information. Where you are staying any phone numbers. Splash of Kauai can also be reached at (808) 246-3485. We prefer to work by internet so we can work when we have time. If you arrive and still have not heard about the status of your reservation please call as soon as you can.

Can I change my reservation?
Yes. There has to be room on the trip that you are changing to. This is easy if you still have time to cancel. At that time there will be no extra charge. Within the cancellation period it gets more difficult. With short time it may not be possible to change. If changes are made with short time there is a good chance that you will be paying extra up to double. Always try to make changes while you still have time to cancel it is easier for everyone.

What to bring?
  * A camera. Possibly a waterproof one if you are snorkeling or to protect from splashes.
* Towel definitely on the snorkel trip. You might want it on the sunset too.
* Swimsuit. (Not needed on the sunset)
* Sunscreen.
* Sunglasses and Hat (These usually fly off if you are not careful)
* An ID if you want to drink alcohol.

On the boat you will be exposed to wind, sun and water (salt and possibly fresh). There are places to get out of the wind sun and water on the boat, but the good spots are out in the elements. There will also be waves rough in some portions of the trip calm at other parts. Some like the waves some do not. Try to think about them as another part of the experience.

What about Scuba diving?
Scuba diving is available on the snorkel Trips only. This is open to certified divers and introductory divers. The dive is a one tank dive. It is a guided dive. Gear is provided. Introductory divers must be in good health, pass a short lesson before the dive.

What age people can do this trip?
This trip is for ages 2 yrs. and up. The trip often has rough sections. It is also to a remote area and medical attention may not be readily available. Not recommended for people with serious medical concerns.

Is the ride rough?
Parts of the trip are usually rough. How rough and which parts vary from day to day. Usually the rough parts of the trip are going North on the Na Pali and going East on the South Shore.

What about seasickness?
Seasickness happens. Is Happens on the calm days and on the rough days. If you are worried about this there are motion sickness medications available. If in doubt take them. They usually work best if taken before the trip so get them early and read the instructions. This can be a very long and miserable trip for the seasick. We do what we can for the seasick but the best cure so far is a good dose of solid ground.

Can I get picked up at my Hotel?
Smith's does run a free shuttle service for the Luau. It is limited from Wailua to Kapaa Hotels.

What if it rains?
Rain showers are a common occurrence in Hawaii and Smith's is prepared. They have lots of umbrellas and they have sheltered places for you to wait out the rain and eat. With major rain storms they do sometimes have to cancel this is usually in the winter.

Smith's Fern Grotto

Is it a hard walk to the Fern Grotto?

Is it a hard walk to the Fern Grotto?
It is a very easy walk to the Fern Grotto from the Smith's boat. There is a paved walkway through a forest garden to the Fern Grotto. It is a couple of 100 yards and the pace is slow.

Scuba Diving

How can I dive for the first time?

How can I dive for the first time?
First of all you are going to have to pass a medical questionnaire. If you have any medical problems and some are quite minor you will have to get a doctors permission.

After that you have two options. The first is the introductory course. This is best if you just want to try diving. You will have a short lesson followed by some practice of some important diving skills. After this you can go diving with a diving instructor in a small group.

The second option is a certification course. In this you will be given much more instruction and much more practicing of more skills. You will also be practicing scuba skills during dives in the ocean. This is done over a few days. At the end of a certification course you will be able to go diving on your own. You should also know what dives you will be able to do on your own.

Kayaking

Can I go kayaking if I have never gone kayaking before?

Can I go kayaking if I have never gone kayaking before?
Yes you can go kayaking if you have never done it before. There is some work to it and you may get a few blisters on your hands. There will be a guide and instructions. Do not try an ocean kayaking trip if you have never kayaked before. On the ocean I only recommend it if you are a good kayaker.

Helicopter Tour

What should I bring on the Helicopter?

What should I bring on the Helicopter?
You should bring your self and a camera. Space is limited on the helicopter so they will not let you bring bags. Bring a simple camera so that you can enjoy the ride more.
